WOMAN'S BEST FRIEND A man from Hanover, Germany gave his wife a choice: remove their snoring Labrador mix from their bed -- or face divorce. The woman chose the dog. KITTEN SURVIVES TEXAS-SIZE FALL A stray kitten astounded Corpus Christi residents when it survived a 100-foot fall from a bridge. Firefighters rescued the eight-week-old cat from a support column, and a vet reported that the kitten's sole injury was a small scratch on the tip of its nose. One firefighter gave the kitty to his daughter -- who named it Thud. LICK THE BEAGLE Snoopy now has his own U.S. postage stamp. The tribute to the late cartoonist Charles Schulz features the lovable Beagle atop his doghouse wearing his World War I flying ace gear. HICCUPPING HEDGEHOGS Many of the United Kingdom's hedgehogs may be suffering from alcholism. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society says many of the critters are availing themselves of the beer left outside by gardners to trap slugs. THE RESURRECTION OF SWEETIE A small dog in Park Hills, Missouri may have borrowed a couple of lives from a cat. After Sweetie was hit by a truck, no heartbeat could be detected, so Sweetie was buried in her owner's back yard. Hours later, Sweetie was found digging herself out of the grave. FISHY ASPHYXIATION Saying, "Hey, watch this," Todd Poller of Bixby, Missouri swallowed a live, 5-inch perch to amuse his friends -- and died. Police and paramedics said that Poller failed to realize a perch wasn't as smooth as a goldfish, so its spiny fins caused it to lodge in -- and tear up -- his throat. CANINE KEEPS CANADA CLEAN A dog named Bingo is teaching kids to pick up litter in Winnepeg. Bingo rides through town on a lime green skateboard while snagging litter in his teeth. Then he drops it into his human's recycling bin. HOOFIN' IT Paul Wilson of Pierre, South Dakota was pulled over by police on his way home from having a few too many at the local bar. He wasn't charged with drinking and driving, but rather drinking and riding. He was on his horse. In South Dakota, riding drunk carries the same penalty as driving drunk. I SMELL SHEEPSKIN Indiana's Valparaiso University decided to honor the service dog belonging to wheelchair-bound grad student Phyllis Ann Burdge. While wearing a doggie tux, Isaac A. Canine was issued what the University termed a "dogploma." GUEST FOR A GUEST The Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver, B.C. has a unique service for tourists who long for canine companionship -- Rent-A-Dog. Teagan the Terrier may be rented by the hour to go for walks or just hang out in a guest's room. FROG CROSSING Cornell University students have organized a group to prevent local frogs from becoming road kill. During frog mating season, the students don orange vests and stop traffic on a road between the frogs' habitat and a pond in which they mate. SCRATCHIN' SCRATCH A Grants, New Mexico woman was charged with stealing a litter box belonging to her former boyfriend. Police said 15 thousand dollars cash was hidden in the box. MOUTH-TO-SNOUT RESUSCITATION A Washington, D.C. firefighter found an unconscious cat in a burning building. He took it outside and resusciated it by placing his mouth over its face. Puddin' the cat survived his bout with smoke inhalation. NOT SMARTER THAN YOUR AVERAGE BEAR After receiving reports of a sleeping bear on a roadside, police in rural Holland found instead a drunken man in a bear suit. The man told police he was too drunk to drive, but passed out while he was walking home from a party. |
