Bailey is a female German Shepard mix that came across some unfortunate circumstances. On January 12, 2013, the CCSPCA received a call from the Fresno Police Department requesting assistance at an apartment complex in southeast Fresno. The Fresno Police needed to conduct a welfare check at an apartment after the management notified them that the current tenant had been evicted. However, the management had not heard from the tenant and they could hear barking coming from inside the apartment. It was reported that the dog had been left in the apartment for at least one week, possibly two, with no care.
When a CCSPCA Officer arrived on scene, they found a very scared and malnourished Bailey. The Officer was able to gain Bailey’s trust and took her to the CCSPCA animal care center. The apartment had obviously been cleaned out. There was trash and feces all over the floor in every room. It appeared Bailey was surviving on whatever she could find to eat in the apartment. Bailey weighed 35 pounds and for her size should weigh at least 45 to 50 pounds.
A further investigation revealed that Bailey was a Service Dog and was well trained. Not to mention, she was very sweet, loves to play fetch, is leash trained and very intelligent; playful yet gentle. Bailey was cared for by the CCSPCA. She had contracted hook worm and kennel cough and was treated for both. A desperate attempt to locate the owner had failed. Bailey was taken out for walks and played with by CCSPCA staff on a daily basis. It was not too long before the entire staff at our animal care center fell in love with her.
After approximately a month of attempts to locate the owner of Bailey, it came time to come up with other options for her. Bailey had been a victim of a horrible crime of animal cruelty and abandonment. It was clear that the owner had no concern or intent to claim her. It was looking bleak for Bailey, but then her luck suddenly changed.
On February 9, 2013, a citizen of Fresno reported that his dog had passed on from old age. He and his wife were devastated. They are both in their 80’s and wanted a companion. The male citizen was a retired US Naval war Veteran. He and his wife were both animal lovers. It seemed as though fate may have changed for Bailey.
The citizen did not have any form of transportation, so Bailey was brought to the citizen’s residence at their request for a meet and greet. It was love at first sight. Bailey quickly bonded with her new Mom and Dad. Arrangements were made at the CCSPCA to get Bailey altered, cleaned, and groomed. Bailey has been rescued and adopted by this compassionate war hero and his loving wife.
