Summertime is here and it’s the perfect time to squeeze in some fun and relaxation for you and dog, too! While having fun, just be aware of the rising temperatures. Make sure the ground isn’t too hot to walk on for your dog’s paws. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen on both you and your dog. We’ve created a list of 12 fun summer things to do with you and your pet.
1. Go Camping!
There are plenty of places around Fresno to go camping.Yosemite National Park, Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park, Bass Lake and Shaver Lake are just some of the places that allow dogs. Be sure to check out their websites to learn about their specific pet regulations. When taking Fido with you, don’t forget to pack their food and water bowls, waste bags, dog food, some of their favorite toys, a leash and collar, their bed (if applicable) and treats. Check out CampTrip’s dog camping checklist for all the essentials when camping!
2. Freeze It!
For dogs that love Kong toys filled with treats, try this cool summer twist. Stuff the Kong (or any fillable dog toy) with your dog’s favorite treat (wet dog food, peanut butter, mashed banana, moistened dry dog food, etc.) then place it in the freezer until it’s solid. Pull it out and give it to your pup for a cool, frozen treat.
3. Host A Hot Dog Party!
Invite your family, friends, neighbors and, of course, their pets for a hot dog barbecue. Buy a kiddie pool and fill it with some cool water to have a pooch pool party. While the dogs are splashing in the pool, cook up some hot dogs on the grill for the humans in attendance. Don’t forget to bring your camera because there will for sure be some photographable moments as your pooches play in the pool.
4. Check Out The Local Dog Parks.
Fresno has five dog-friendly parks. For more information and locations of each dog park, visit the City of Fresno’s dog park website. Always ensure your dog is up to date on vaccines when visiting dog parks. Also, be sure you know dog park etiquette before taking your dog to the park.
5. Take A Scenic Car Ride.
Roll those windows down (partially) and take a drive – possibly up to Millerton Lake or Wonder Valley. Most dogs love car rides and love to stick their head out the window. They enjoy all the “new” sights and smells. You get the enjoyment of a pretty view and watching your pooch have the ride of his/her life.
6. Make Popsicles For Your Pups.
What’s the fastest way to a dog’s heart? Through its stomach, of course! So show your best pal how much you care by making some seasonal treats. You can make savory “pup”sicles or simply freeze some watermelon cubes for a sweet treat. For some sweet and savory “pup”sicle recipes, click here. Best served outside.
7. Take Your Dog Out On The Town.
Find some local dog-friendly restaurants to take your pooch along with you. BringFido is a great website to find dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, attractions, etc. You will be amazed how many people will stop by your table to say “hi” to your pet. This could be a good way to meet new people!
8. Beach Trip!
Head to the nearest (or your favorite) dog-friendly beach to beat the heat. Grab your dog’s favorite throw toy (frisbee, ball, stuffed toy, etc.) to toss on the beach. If you dog doesn’t like playing fetch, then let them wade in the waves or sniff the sand. Some dogs may even catch a scent and go on a digging frenzy. Some of the closest (in drive time) Central Coast dog friendly beaches are Cayucos State Beach, Avila Beach and Pismo State Beach.
9. Start A Dog Walking Group.
This is a great way to get active with your pooch while meeting new people. Make sure you walk during the coolest parts of the day (early mornings and later evenings), especially when Fresno temperatures spike over the 100’s. To start a walking group – set a date and time, put a call out (posting fliers or posting on meetup.com) and get ready to meet new people and pooches. You could make this walking group daily, weekly, monthly – it’s all up to you. (add dog walking pic)
10. Create An Agility Course In Your Backyard.
You can create an obstacle course relatively easy with a few pieces of equipment: a hula hoop, a mesh tunnel, cones, dowelling, etc.) The possibilities are endless. Check out Modern Dog’s DIY agility course. (add agility course pic)
11. Some More Water Fun.
Head out to a local safe body of water for an afternoon of swimming or boating. Some of the local lakes are Shaver Lake, Millerton Lake, Bass Lake and Pine Flat Lake. When on the water, always be prepared and know your water safety. Here are five water safety tips: Never leave your pets unsupervised, heat is more intense around water, buy and use a pet life jacket, rinse off your dog after swimming and try not to allow your dog to drink pool or lake water.
12. Volunteer.
Do you have a mild manner and temperament dog? Look into providing a therapy dog for local hospitals and nursing homes. A visit from a friendly, furry pet can bring a smile to the less fortunate or ill people.
It is proven that people who include their pet into their daily activities form a stronger, healthier bond to that animal. Dogs that are exposed to a variety of activities are more social, less anxious and tend to be less timid. So, go have some fun with fido this summer!
