As part of the CCSPCA’s mission, we aim to educate and encourage Fresno residents to spay and neuter their pets. Spaying and neutering your pets is the number one way to prevent pet overpopulation, which in turn reduces the amount of homeless animals and shelter euthanasia rates. The key is to prevent the problem before it begins. Spaying or neutering also has other physical, behavioral, and environmental benefits. For more information about how to reduce the number of stray pets, please visit 10 Ways to Decrease the Number of Stray Animals.
Spay and neuter procedures are common surgeries performed by veterinarians while your pet is under anesthesia. Female animals are spayed by removing their ovaries and uterus, and male animals are neutered by removing their testicles.
We offer a low-cost spay and neuter program called Hip, Snip, Hooray. It provides an affordable price to the community to prevent unwanted pets. Hip, Snip, Hooray prices for spay or neuter surgery range from $29 to $103, depending on the weight of your pet. That is considerably less than what it would cost to care for a litter of puppies or kittens.
We also offer a program for low-income families called Snip-N-Chip. If you qualify for the Snip-N-Chip program, the price for a spay or neuter is only $35 per pet (four pets total per person) and includes a free microchip.
The importance of spaying and neutering is so prevalent that in 1995, World Spay Day was dedicated to the fourth Tuesday of February. World Spay Day is now a program of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Humane Society International (HSI), and Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA). According to worldspayday.org, World Spay Day is the first and only international day of action to promote the spaying or neutering of pets, community cats and street dogs to save animals’ lives. On World Spay Day, and throughout the month of February (Spay/Neuter Awareness Month), veterinary and animal welfare professionals, business owners, and concerned individuals join forces to shine a spotlight on spay/neuter as the most effective and humane means of decreasing the number of homeless animals euthanized in shelters or living on the street.
The CCSPCA will be participating in World Spay Day. Please visit our Facebook page and website for further details about this event.
We urge you to consider spaying or neutering your pet to help prevent unwanted litters and pet overpopulation this month. If your pets are already spayed or neutered, consider educating your family and friends about the importance to your community about spaying and neutering pets. A great way to do that is to participate in World Spay Day by donating, sharing information on social media, or having a conversation with a friend or neighbor about the importance of spaying and neutering.
