On December 3, 2015 we received a call from a concerned citizen about children burying small puppies alive. One of our Humane Officers rushed out to the scene to investigate. When our office arrived she asked the family if there were puppies on the property. They denied having any puppies, however, one of the children residing at the residence said they had five puppies. Our officer asked the child to show her the puppies and they led her to a broken down van, opened the door, and handed her three small terrier looking puppies. The officer asked where the other puppies were. There was silence and then another child said that they were around the corner. As our office turned the corner she saw a makeshift one foot by one foot grave with two dead puppies lying in it. The officer asked how these puppies died and a young boy said that when he got home from school he noticed the puppies having labored breathing, so he began performing CPR and other “live saving tactics”. Unfortunately, due to his procedures he accidentally killed them. In order to save the rest of the litter, our officer seized the three remaining puppies and their mother. The mother was no longer lactating, dehydrated and malnourished. Her three puppies were also dehydrated and malnourished. The puppies were approximately 5 weeks old. The officer brought them to our animal center where they were assessed by our veterinarian and staff. The puppies were placed in immediate foster care; however, one was so malnourished that it did make it. The mother, named Meme, and her two remaining puppies, Pebbles and Bam Bam, have recovered and have found their forever, loving homes.
