Original Story: In August 2015 we had a call regarding the welfare of a senior aged horse in the foothills near Millerton Lake. One of our officers drove to the location to find a slightly underweight senior horse that needed veterinarian care. He told the owners that they needed to provide veterinary care, feed a high quality diet so she would put on weight, and that he would be back in a couple weeks to check on the progress of the horse. When the officer arrived for the follow up, the owners had not provided medical care and it looked like she had lost even more weight. In September 2015, the officer seized the senior horse, named Mison. When she arrived at our animal center, we fed her senior horse feed, which she demolished. Our veterinarian stated that she was approximately 32 years old, 200 pounds underweight, had a diastolic heart murmur, conjunctivitis, and rain rot on her back. Due to Mison’s age, she would need a special senior feed diet. We will be submitting a request for charges of Penal Code 597 neglect to the District Attorney’s office against Mison’s owner.
Update 2-16: Mison has gained a little over 200 pounds and is now happy and healthy.
