CCSPCA Helps Stranded Family and Their Pets on Interstate-5

On July 30, 2015, a very hot Thursday afternoon, we received a call from the Fresno California Highway Patrol about an abandoned horse trailer with four horses in it on Interstate-5 near the Shields Avenue off-ramp. When we arrived on scene we found the owners and their animals, all very hot and tired on the side of the interstate.

They had not abandoned the trailer after all, but instead had become stranded because the trailer hitch had broken. The owners, Jenny and Tony …Field, had 3 horses, a mini mule, 4 large dogs, 2 small dogs, a cockatoo, goose, duck, and iguana. They were in the process of moving their entire family (8 adults and 2 children) from Texas to Oregon. As soon as we got there, Jenny and Tony broke down in tears, thankful that somebody was finally helping them. They loaded their horses and mini mule into our trailer, then quickly loaded the dogs into vehicles and followed us to our animal center where we provided emergency overnight boarding for their animals.

Luckily they found a welder who was able to fix their trailer. The next day they picked up their animals from us and continued their way to Oregon, arriving on Sunday safe and sound.
